EDWARD ARVIN DeBATES, age 90, of Luverne, formerly of Adrian, died Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. He was born August 21, 1927, in Jasper, to Charles and Amanda (Donth) DeBates. Eddie attended school in Adrian. He served his country from 1952 to 1954 in the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of Staff Sargent.
After Eddie married Esther Woltjer, the couple lived in Adrian. To this union three children were born, Peggy, Steven and Douglas.
Eddie married Dianne Berger on December 16, 1978 in Las Vegas, NV. After their marriage, the couple lived in Sioux Falls, SD. Earlier, Eddie worked as Shift Manager at Safeway, in Adrian, for over eighteen years. He also owned and operated Eddies Standard and Eddies Amoco in Adrian.
He was a member of the Sioux Falls VFW. He enjoyed delivering the Sioux Falls Argus Leader in bulk to various cities and working at the Holiday Park in Sioux Falls.
Eddie is survived by his wife, Dianne DeBates, Luverne; two children, Peggy (Jeff) Carrier, Adrian; and Steve (Lori) DeBates, Marshall; five step children, Tammy Ransier, Sioux Falls; Cindy (Doug) Archer, Adrian; Barb (Mike) Mallette, Burlington, IA; Roxy (Bob) Vandendries, Canistota, SD; and Mark (Julie) Berger, Las Vegas, NV; two grandchildren, Dan (Leah) DeBates and Shelby (Brandon) Coens; five great-grandchildren, Kalsee (Vincent) Kohs, Brady, Linkcoln and Tucker Brouwer, and Kaylee DeBates; one great-great-grandson, Grayson Brouwer; six step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; brother, Robert DeBates, Adrian; sister, Lorraine McCormick, Minnetonka; many nieces & nephews; and a special niece, Barbra Irrgang.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Douglas DeBates in 1964; grandson, Jesse Carrier in 2001; ex wife, Esther; and two sisters, Elaine Vogt and Therese Manley.
A time of fellowship will be from 11 am to 1 pm Saturday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Adrian. A memorial service will be 1 pm Saturday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Adrian, officiated by Pastor Tom Vogt. Burial with full military honors provided by the Adrian American Legion will be at the St. Adrian Cemetery.
