JOEL E. OLSON, age 76, of Moore, OK, formerly of Magnolia, died Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at his home. He was born March 7, 1941, in Luverne, to Eldor and Elizabeth (Jensen) Olson. Joel graduated from Magnolia High School. He later received his Bachelor’s Degree from Augustana University in 1964. He received his Meteorology Degree from Penn State. He served his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1967.

   Joel worked as a Meteorologist tracking tornadoes for the National Weather Service and the Severe Storm Center in Kansas City and later Oklahoma City.

   He was a member of the Luverne Masonic Lodge, and the Retired Weatherman Association. Joel belonged to the Sierra Club and the Norman Oklahoma Citizens Climate Lobby. His activism led him to Washington DC in order to lobby for these environmental causes. He considered himself an environmentalist. He was an avid reader and enjoyed music, computers, golfing and playing (GO) competitively.

   Joel is survived by his brother, Bruce (Barb) Olson, Magnolia; sister-in-law, Linda Olson, Laurel, MD; five nieces & nephews, Noël (Casey) Steinert, Holly (Doug) Forster, Eric Olson, Kris (Megan) Olson, and Kari (Kevin) Hirst; and six great nieces & nephews, Cameron & Lauren Steinert, Emma & Bailey Olson, and Ian & Cole Hirst.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leon Olson; sister, Gayle Olson; and many uncles & aunts.

   A time of fellowship will be Saturday, June 9, 2018, from 1-3 PM, at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Luverne. Burial of cremains will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
