RALPH CHARLES MATTHEWS, age 98, of Worthington, died Tuesday May 9, 2017, at his home. He was born July 6, 1918, at his grandparents’ home in Grand Township north of Wessington, SD, to Charles and Elizabeth (Dessonville) Matthews. Ralph attended Brown rural school in Nance Township near Wessington. At the age of sixteen, he found employment near Worthington, and worked for various farmers in the area.
Ralph married Bertha Bayerkohler on December 13, 1940 in Worthington. After their marriage the couple farmed with Francis Trunk north of Worthington, for many years, eventually buying the farm. They retired after thirty five years. Ralph & Bertha took satisfaction in their work, especially keeping the farmyard, and beautiful gardens. After they retired in 1983, they moved to Worthington, owning and moving into homes on Park Avenue, the former Gilbert Dessonville home on Hwy. 59. They moved into The Homestead in 1996. Ralph later became a resident of the Yecumen Meadows Assisted Living in 2014.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Worthington, where he had served as an Usher; the Fairview Farmers Club; Director of the Nobles County Coop Oil Board; Director of the Worthington Township Board; the Nobles County Fair Board; and a township road grader. Ralph used his gifts of commitment, administration and vision often in volunteering for the betterment of his community. In particular, Ralph was proud to point out the attributes of the Homestead Cooperative, which he helped plan as a Coop Director. He was a stalwart resident of Worthington. Ralph was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed visiting with people. He lived his 98 years grateful for every day God gave. His ready smile and cheerful positive attitude greeted everyone he met, and he set an unforgettable example of how to live.
Ralph is survived by his brother, Marvin (Rita) Matthews, Wessington, SD; a faithful friend & neighbor, John & Gloria Widboom, Worthington; a special niece, Phyllis Steinman, Fulda; and many nieces & nephews.
