VIRGIL CLAUDE BOYD, age 94, of Luverne, died Friday, December 8, 2006, at the Mary Jane Brown Home, in Luverne. He was born December 29, 1911, in Rowena, SD, to Ray and Mae Boyd. He attended school in Valley Springs, SD and graduated from Valley Springs High School.
Virgil married Emma Newberg on August 18, 1936, in Canton, SD. After their marriage, the couple lived in Sioux Falls, SD where Virgil was manager of a Sunshine Foods warehouse. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Virgil received serious war wounds in Luzon, Philippines on January 19, 1945 for which he received the Purple Heart. After serving in the war, Virgil & Emma lived in Beaver Creek where Virgil served as City Clerk for several years. In 1964, he retired and the couple moved to Luverne. Virgil became a resident of the Mary Jane Brown Home in October of 2003.
He enjoyed collecting antique glassware; and in his earlier years, he enjoyed dancing.
Virgil is survived by several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Emma Boyd, on October 28, 2004; infant daughter, Gloria; and a sister, Virginia Torkelson.
A tree will be dedicated in memory of Virgil Boyd, by Hospice of Sioux Valley Luverne Hospital.
