GEORGE KOENS, age 90, of Luverne, died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Sanford Sioux Falls Medical Center. He was born August 9, 1922 in Westside Township, Nobles County, MN; to parents Frank Sr. and Sena (Buss) Koens. He attended school in Luverne and also Beaver Creek. He served his country in the United States Marines from September 27, 1945 until July 10, 1946.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Leona Gonnerman on June 3, 1951 in Luverne. He started farming in Garretson and later moved to Springwater Township and then to Martin Township nears Hills, MN; and then purchased a farm west of Hardwick. George retired from farming in 1986 and moved to Luverne. He worked for 23 years at Beaver Creek Rest area and received recognition of outstanding effort with the top ten award in 2005.
George was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hills and was on the church board and served as an elder and trustee. He became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne when they moved back to Luverne and was earlier baptized and confirmed on May 11, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne.
He enjoyed farming, baseball and he played for many years for the Garretson baseball team as a catcher.
George is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Koens, Luverne; children, Rochard Koens, St. Louis Park, MN; and Linda (James) Barnhart, Chaska, MN; four grandchildren, Rebecca Koens, Dana Koens, Ryan Barnhart and Katie Barnhart and one great grandchild Kylee Sauers; brothers, William Koens, Seattle, WA; and Frank Koens Jr. Garretson, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents three brothers and two sisters.
