GILBERT MEYER, age 90, of Wilmont, was born on March 3, 1928, to Harm and Rosa (Beckmann) Meyer. He grew up on the family farm in rural Fulda. He received his early education in the country school near Pfingsten, and later attended Fulda Public Schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on January 16, 1951 and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict in the 25th MP Division. He was honorably discharged on October 15, 1952 and returned to work on the family farm.
On October 4, 1956, Gilbert was united in marriage to Shirley Gerber. They made their home in Bloom Township, rural Wilmont, where they farmed their entire lives. During their sixty two years of marriage, Gilbert and Shirley were truly partners in life and made many wonderful memories together. They loved going to dances at the VFW in Wilmont and spending Sunday afternoons with their extended family sharing precious time together.
He was a longtime member of the VFW Post 2603 and volunteered many hours. He also enjoyed hunting with his friends, son, brothers-in-law and nephews. In his retirement years, he enjoyed shooting pool with his Wilmont Community Center buddies and evening drives to the farm to check on the crops.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Shirley Meyer, Wilmont; five children, Jud (Elaine) Meyer, Gallatin, TN; Jill Daly, Rochester; Gaye (Ron) McCann, Owatonna; Staci (John) Veenker, Windom; and Jennifer (Mat Browne) Meyer, Andover; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alyce (Clint) Tracy; and his son-in-law, Brian Daly.
