Alvarus Henry Schnieder died September 30, 2006 at Sunset Cottage Sioux Valley Hospice in Worthington, MN. Born on November 29, 1917 the son of Henry and Elizabeth Recker/Schnieder. He was raised on a farm near Lismore, MN. He started his education in a country school near his home and then attended St. Anthony?s Grade School and High School in Lismore. After graduation he farmed with his brothers until he was drafted into service in World War II on December 1, 1941. He served in the European Theater with the 3rd Armored Division in battles from Normandy to the Elbe River. He was awarded a Purple Heart, five Bronze Stars and most recently he received the Normandy Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty. He was honorably discharged from the army on May 5, 1945 and attended the Northwest Radio and Television Institute in Minneapolis and Coyne Electric and Refrigeration School in Chicago. He settled in Worthington and married Marie Gengler. On April 19, they celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary. From 1947-1982, he worked for the Worthington Electric Shop until his retirement which he spent reading, traveling and visiting family. He was a member of St. Mary?s Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Catholic Order of Forresters. His parents, six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. He was the last surviving member of his family. Surviving him is his wife Marie, six daughters; Mary (Gene) Larson of Prior Lake, MN, Joan (Charles) Koehnen of Rosemount, MN, Liz (Joe) Tripp of Boca Raton, FL, Rita Schnieder and friend (Wayne Ammel) of Wimberley, TX, Barbara Schnieder of Mankato, MN, Susan (Joe) Ormsby of St. Cloud, MN; two sons, Henry Schnieder of Lenox, IA and Stephen (Lori) Schnieder of Worthington, MN. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and one great grandson. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Sunset Cottage Sioux Valley Hospice or the St. Mary?s Endowment Fund.
