ALVINA FREADA HITCH, age 87 years and 3 days, of Luverne, died Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne. She was born November 3, 1925, in Luverne, to Fred and Freada (Westerbuer) Smeins. She attended school in Luverne.
Alvina married Harvey M. Hitch on November 12, 1943, in Luverne. While Harvey served his country during WWII, Alvina lived in Louisiana. After Harvey's discharge, the couple lived in Luverne. Alvina worked for Vern & Ardeth Kraesch. She also worked at the Cozy Rest Motel, in Luverne, for over twenty four years.
Alvina was a member of the United Methodist Church in Luverne; and the Luverne American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at the Mary Jane Brown Home, the Minnesota Veterans Home & the Crisis Center. Alvina enjoyed crocheting, sewing & crafts. She especially took pride in making bears for RSVP to give to school children.
Alvina is survived by her daughter, Kathy Schadwinkel, Luverne; three grandchildren, Todd Schadwinkel, Cheryl Hitch and Harvey Leon Hitch; many great grandchildren; sister, Audrey Poppen, Chandler, AZ; brother, Fred (Judy) Smeins, College Station, TX; sister-in-law, Marie Smeins, Luverne; and many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, in 2007; son, Harvey, in 2010; brother, Myron Smeins; and a sister, Donna Faye Smeins.
A memorial service will be 10:30 am Friday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Luverne, officiated by Pastor Dorie Hall. A time of fellowship will be from 9:30 to 10:30 am Friday at the Dingmann Funeral Home. A private burial will preceded the service at the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
