Amanda Shepherd of Worthington, MN, formerly of Minneapolis, died on Saturday, January 28, 2012. She was born July 10, 1914, on a farm near Louisburg, Minnesota, to Gilbert and Anna (Morstad) Kittleson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Louisburg Lutheran Church.
She attended grade school in Louisburg and graduated from high school in Madison, MN. She attended teachers training at Appleton, MN, and taught in country schools before graduating from the University of Minnesota.
Her early passion was to teach disabled children which she did when she went to Jamestown, ND to teach at The Crippled Children's School. Following WWII, she moved to Minneapolis where she directed a preschool program for blind children at the Minneapolis Society for the Blind. She was married to Bernard Shepherd on December 22, 1948. Following the birth of her children, she returned to teaching preschool deaf children in Minneapolis at Agassiz Elementary and later Kindergarten at Whittier Elementary.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Elmer and Arnold. She is survived by her husband Bernard; sons Mark (Marcia) of Worthington and Gregory (Mary) of Coral Gables, Florida; grandson John; and sister Gladys Hubert of Waconia, MN as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will take place at American Lutheran Church in Worthington from 10 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2012 to be followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Fort Snelling will take place at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the American Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.
