ANASTASIA AGNES ENGEL, age 93, of Ellsworth, MN (and Kailua, HI), died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at home in Kailua, Hawaii. She was born January 15, 1916, in Ellsworth, Minnesota, to Nerres and Ethel (Rowe) Fischenich. Anastasia graduated from St. Mary?s Catholic High School in 1936. She attended McKennan Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, SD, and graduated with an R.N. degree in 1939. Following graduation, Anastasia worked as a nurse for McKennan Hospital and continued living in Sioux Falls. There she met Edwin Engel, a master sergeant in the US Army Air Corps, who was stationed in Sioux Falls at the time. Anastasia married Edwin Voris Engel on September 20, 1943, in Sioux City, IA. When World War II ended, she moved with Edwin back to his family home in Stewardson, Illinois. Edwin was a partner in the Engel Co., a hardware and lumber business. Anastasia worked as a nurse at the Effingham Hospital, until their son was born in 1946. When Edwin died in 1948, Anastasia and her son John moved back to Ellsworth, MN, to be with her family of origin. She worked as a private-duty nurse, as a Public Health Nurse for Nobles County, and finally, as Director of Nurses for Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Ellsworth. Anastasia retired in 1983, after 44 years of professional practice as a nurse. She was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church and the St. Mary?s Council of Catholic Women, in Ellsworth. And in Hawaii, she was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, in Kailua. Anastasia was a frequent participant at daily mass in both Minnesota and Hawaii. She enjoyed her family, gardening, needle point, rug making, and travel. Over the years, her travel took her to all but one of the states of the Union, and to foreign countries such as Cuba, Canada, Mexico, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, and Ireland. After retirement, she was able to spend her summers in Minnesota and winters in Hawaii. During her summers in Minnesota, she visited her brother Bill Fischenich on Deer Lake and enjoyed her own home and yard on the north edge of Ellsworth. When in Hawaii, she lived with her son John and family in Kailua, on the windward side of Oahu (island). Anastasia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Barbara Engel, Kailua, HI; two granddaughters, Patricia Engel, Cambridge, MA; Theresa Engel Dudek, a grand-son-in-law, Bruce Dudek, great-grandson Noah Dudek, Ashland, MT; two brothers, Cecil Fischenich, Ellsworth, MN; and Bill Fischenich, Deer Lake; one sister, Marian Fischenich Palmer, Torrington, CT; and 26 nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
