ANNA HENRIETTA ENGELKES, age 92, of Rushmore, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at her home. She was born June 4, 1922, on the family farm southwest of Rushmore, to Henry and Sophia (Oltmans) Engelkes. She attended country school near Rushmore.
Anna grew up in the Rushmore area and lived there most of her life. During WWII, she worked as a welder at the shipyards in California. After the war, Anna moved back to Rushmore where she helped on the farm. She also worked at Berfiends Variety Store, the grocery store and at Daryl's Service in Rushmore for over fifty years.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church south of Rushmore. Anna was also an Election Judge for Olney Township. She owned and operated The Rushmore Booster from 1953 to the present. She loved the outdoors, farming, playing the guitar & accordion and spending time with friends & family.
Anna is survived by her nephew, Alan (Deanna) Engelkes, rural Rushmore; niece, Colleen (Joe) Valente, Thunder Bay, Canada; a great niece, Kari (friend, Kyle) Engelkes; and five great nephews, Aaron (fiancé, Kelley) Engelkes; Chris Engelkes; Joey Valente; David Valente; and Jonathan Valente.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Harry (Darlene) Engelkes.
Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Adrian; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, south of Rushmore, officiated by Rev. James Krapf. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore.
