Arlene Margaret McCarthy, age 88,of Adrian died August 12, 2014, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, Minnesota.  She was born October 21, 1925, in Slayton, MN to George and Virginia (Brouillet) Galles.  She attended country school and graduated from Slayton High School in 1942 at the age of 16.  She worked at Silverberg Bros. in Slayton before entering the McKennan Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls where she graduated in 1946.
Arlene married Jerauld (Red) McCarthy on November 28, 1946, in Slayton.  They moved from Sioux Falls to Adrian on July 1, 1950, where she worked at the Drs. Arnold, Nealy, and Laikola Clinic for 8 years before retiring from nursing.  In 1961 she started a small greenhouse, which grew into McCarthy's Floral.  In 1985, she and Red started another McCarthy's Floral in Worthington.  She retired from the floral business in 1988.
She was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, CCW, Adrian Chamber of Commerce, Adrian Lions, and The American Legion Auxiliary.
She was an avid bridge and pinochle player. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and Scrabble.  She especially enjoyed chocolate, sweet rolls, and ice cream.
She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses.  Dorance and Jane McCarthy, Adrian;  Kevin McCarthy and Kathy, Tuscon, AZ;  Kathy and Mark Hogan, Chaska;  Kelly and Tammy McCarthy, Worthington; 8 grandchildren, Megan (Earl), Kelsey, Ryan (Yesenia), Andy, Jeff, Kelly, Molly (Michael), and Katy; 3 Great Grandchildren, Ethan, Ariana, and Morgan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jerauld(Red), 2 brothers, Vernon and Dorance, 1 sister, Yvonne, and 2 sons, Jeffrey and Joseph.
Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Friday, with parish prayers at 5:00 pm, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Adrian. Visitation also from 9:30 to 10:15 am Saturday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Saturday at St. Adrian Catholic Church, in Adrian, officiated by Fr. Andrew Beerman. Burial will be in the St. Adrian Cemetery.
