BERNARD ?BARNEY? JEROME HARSTAD, age 87, of Worthington, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born on November 11, 1919 in Montevideo, MN. After graduating from high school, he attended Dunwoody Institute where he trained to be an electrician. After Barney completed his studies he was employed by Western Electric until enlisting in the United States Navy. He served more than four years during WWII on a destroyer ship, the USS Wilson. Upon discharge from the military he returned to Western Electric. During his employment, Barney was asked if he would go to Spencer, IA to help install a new switchboard system at the telephone company. It was at the Spencer telephone office that he met his future wife, Lois Keifer. On November 2, 1947, Barney was united in marriage to Lois and they made their home in Minneapolis for the next two years. The couple decided to leave the city and moved to Worthington and began farming. They lived in Sanborn, IA for one year and then returned to Worthington where they have remained. After retiring Barney continued to keep busy as a township assessor and a courtesy driver for Spomer Motors. Barney also helped the Reading Senior Citizens and donated his time at the church. Barney was a member of RSVP, Civil Air Patrol, and the Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, visiting with friends and a good cup of coffee. Barney is survived by his wife, Lois Harstad, Worthington; four children, Steve Harstad, Valley Springs, SD; Don (Nancy) Harstad, Pipestone, MN; Jeri (Bill) Sirovy, Jackson, MN; Amy (Jim) Stefferud, Reading, MN; six grandchildren, Mike (Andrea) Harstad, Jennifer Harstad, Andy (Jen) Harstad , B.J. Harstad, Dan Harstad, Jeremy Johnson, four great-grandchildren, Samantha Banghart, Jacob Banghart, Lauren Harstad, Zachary Harstad and one sister, Helen. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marjorie, and his daughter, Karleen. Blessed Be His Memory.
