BETTY ANN (HURLEY) SCHMITZ, age 78, of Lakefield, formerly of Okabena, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield.  She was born in Heron Lake on May 9, 1934 to parents, Archie and Gladys (Nurse) Hurley of Ewington Township.  She attended Ewington School and graduated from Okabena High School in 1952. After graduation she attended Mankato Business College.  After her schooling she worked at the Heron Lake Hospital and this is where she met her spouse.
On August 21, 1954 she was united in marriage to James J. Schmitz.  On March 2, 1955, Steven M. Schmitz was born.  After her marriage Betty worked at Skaggs Grocery in Worthington. Then the couple moved to Mankato and she worked at Equitable. In 1967 they moved to Minneapolis and Betty worked for B. Dalton for twenty-five years. In 1992 the couple retired and moved back to Okabena.
Betty was a member of church Heron Lake Sacred Heart Church and she enjoyed traveling with her husband and other relatives out west to Las Vegas.
She is survived by one son, Steve (MaDonna) Schmitz, Bloomington, two grandchildren, Matthew and Michael, one brother, Harold Hurley, Windom, MN; and a sister Lois Foote; Worthington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Delbert and Merle Hurley and one sister, Audrey (Hurley) Rausenberger.
