BETTY L. BAKKEN, age 78, of Brandon, SD, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born December 3, 1932, in Clifton Township, rural Traverse County, MN, to Lawrence and Dorothy (Johnson) Roy. She attended Wheaton High School. Betty moved to Minneapolis in 1952 where she worked at Power Dry Goods. In 1954, she moved to Denver, CO where she worked at Gates Rubber Co.
Betty married Kenneth Bakken on July 14, 1957, in Wahpeton, SD. After their marriage, the couple lived in Wahpeton. Betty was a homemaker and sold Avon cosmetics. The couple lived in Hills from 2005 to 2009. They then lived in Texas before moving to Luverne.
She was a member of the Brandon Valley Assembly of God Church; and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery work, fishing, traveling and baking pies.
Betty is survived by her seven children, Michael (Carla) Bakken, Garden City, KS; Marjorie (Larry) Moe, Orange, CA; Jane Andreoff, St. Peter; Larry (Margo) Bakken, Milford, MA; Mary Wing, Garretson, SD; Barry (Gena) Bakken, Brandon, SD; and Sherri Steenstra, Jasper; twenty five grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and a brother, William (Patricia) Roy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth, on June 2, 2010; granddaughter, Serenity Angel Bakken; a great granddaughter; and a nephew, Michael Lawrence Roy.
