BRADLEY WILLIAM BENSON, age 77, of Adrian, MN passed away at the Adrian Country Living Cottages on Monday, September 5, 2011.
Brad was born October 9, 1933 in Sheldon, IA, the son of Frederick and Myrtle (Steen) Benson. He was a graduate of Sheldon High School and attended South Dakota State University. He reached the rank of Sergeant First Class in the US Army Corp of Engineers, including service in the Korean War, and was discharged in 1955. From 1957 to 1973, Brad was employed by Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. as a district fieldman, and claims supervisor in Osceola, Vinton and Sheldon, IA.
Brad and his father joined together and established the Iron Horse Supper Club in Sheldon and operated the popular dining spot from 1973 to 1981. After the Iron Horse, he established a crop insurance agency, The Benson Company, in Osceola, IA until his retirement.
He was a very active volunteer and served as a member and leader in many organizations. Being chief of the Sheldon Fire Department for 11 years was a highlight. He also served as a member of the Iowa State University Fire Extension Service for 9 years. He was a lifelong Republican, an outdoorsman, and a good friend. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Osceola, IA, and was a director of the Sheldon Chamber of Commerce for 3 years.
Brad is survived by his wife, Karen Benson, Osceola, IA; daughter, Anne (Jim) LeBrun, Adrian, MN; son, Thomas; brother, Rodney (Margaret) Benson, Charlevoix, MI; three grandchildren, Tyler and his wife, Anna Meyer, Gwinner, ND; Alex LeBrun and Brandon LeBrun, Adrian, MN; stepdaughters, Michelle Snell, Des Moines, IA; Melissa Snell, Osceola, IA; aunt, Marilyn McKay, Jacksonville, FL; goddaughter, Kim Lieberherr, Maple Grove, MN; cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Joyce (Lund) Benson and two infant children.
A time of fellowship will be from 5-7 PM Friday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Adrian; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. A memorial service will be 11 AM Saturday at the Zion Lutheran Church, in Adrian, officiated by Rev. Kerry Boese. Burial with full military honors will be at 2 PM Saturday at the Eastlawn Cemetery in Shelson, IA.
