CHARLES EDWARD HENDERSON, age 62, of Worthington, died Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born on July 10, 1949 in Hollister, CA to parents George and Laura (Collier) Henderson. After the death of his father, the family moved to Worthington and he attended Worthington Public School. After his schooling, Charles enlisted in the United States Army and served from September 17, 1967 to June 11, 1971 during the Vietnam War. During his enlistment, Charles was awarded a purple heart, air medal with V device for valor, an air combat badge and medals for meritorious service. After Charles was honorably discharged he farmed with his brother-in-law and later worked for Gerdes Construction.
On August 31, 1986 he was united in marriage to Carol DePauw at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Worthington. After their marriage the couple made their home in Worthington. Charles worked as a security guard for Swift and then owned and operated a security business and provided security for Campbell Soup until the company closed. He later worked as a driver for Medi-Van.
Charles enjoyed shooting pool, golfing, watching sports, playing cards, especially pinochle. Charles also enjoyed cooking and spending time with family and friends..
He is survived by his wife, Carol Henderson, Worthington; three sisters, Elsie Rutzen, Worthington; Louise (Galen) Morgan, Las Vegas, NV; Carol (Mathew) Johannes, Harris, IA; two brothers, Bob (Diane) Henderson, Worthington; and Gary Henderson, nieces and nephews and his special family, Shannen, Mark, Ashley and Andrew Muller, Roxanne, Lyman, Nicholas and Nathan Paulsen.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The memorial service will be Saturday at 10:30 AM with Father Jim Callahan officiating. Burial of the cremains with full military honors will be the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Worthington.
