CYRIL F. GENGLER, age 83, of Luverne, formerly of Lismore, died Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at his home. He was born December 25, 1930, on the family farm in rural Lismore, to John Peter and Josephine (Klontz) Gengler. He graduated from St. Anthony Catholic High School in Lismore in 1948.
During the Korean Conflict he served his country as a Combat Engineer in the United States Army from 1952 to 1953. After being honorably discharged he returned to the family farm.
Cyril was united in marriage to Marcella Hoffmann on December 27, 1969, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Wabasso. Cyril enjoyed farming until the couple retired in 1999. They continued to live on the home place until August 2014 when they moved to Luverne.
As a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church he served as a Eucharistic minister and an usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Cyril became a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church after moving to Luverne. He was active in the Lismore American Legion, Post 636, for 62 years, serving as post commander for 24 years. Cyril loved visiting with his children, grandchildren, and extended family around the country, as well as hosting his many nieces and nephews on the farm, where they were "farm kids" during their stay.
Cyril is survived by his wife, Marcella Gengler, Luverne; four children, Karla (Joe) Gengler-Nowak, Columbus, OH; Eric (Minoli Perera) Gengler, Chicago, IL; Brenda Gengler, Chicago, IL; and Teresa (Erik Peterson) Gengler, Revillo, SD; four grandchildren, Erick and Susana Nowak, and Rohan and Wolfgang Gengler; sister, Marie Schnieder, Worthington; two brothers, Gordon Gengler, Sioux Falls, SD; and Jack (Gisela) Gengler, Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Loretta Gengler, Adrian; brother-in-law, William Murphy, Salem, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leo and Paul Gengler; two sisters, Bernice Murphy and Rose Rapattoni; brother-in-law, Al Schnieder; and two sisters-in-law, Dolores Gengler and Marietta Gengler.
Visitation will be from 4-8pm Friday, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:15 pm and parish prayers at 7:30 pm, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lismore. Visitation also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, in Lismore, officiated by Frs. Andrew Beerman & Thomas Jennings. Burial with full military honors provided by the Lismore American Legion Post #636, will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Lismore.
