DENA A. (WERKMAN) THOLEN, age 94, of Rushmore, died Sunday, November 4, 2007, at the Arnold Memorial Health Care Center, in Adrian. She was born May 3, 1913, on a farm near Rushmore, to Jake and Geesien (Dammer) Aning. She attended country school near Rushmore. Dena married Abe Werkman on November 27, 1934, at the State Line Baptist Church. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Rushmore area. In 1962, they retired and moved into Rushmore. Abe died on July 6, 1973. Dena continued to live on the farm until moving to the Meadows, in Worthington, in 2005. She became a resident of the Arnold Memorial Health Care Center, in Adrian, on January 10, 2007. She was a member of the Eastfriesland Church of Christ, in Rushmore; and an active member on the Rushmore Senior Citizens. Dena volunteered for RSVP; and the Pioneer Village, in Worthington. She enjoyed playing cards, popcorn & especially spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her two sons, Dick Werkman, Round Lake; and Jacob (Linda) Werkman, Rushmore; four grandchildren, Pam, Jim, Lori (Dan), & Paula (Steven); four great grandchildren, Justin, Koy, Dylan & Owen; sister, Mary Harsma, Worthington; two sisters-in-law, Gert Aning, Luverne; and Eleanor Aning, Ellsworth; and a special friend, Thelma Middagh. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Abe; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four sisters; and three brothers.
