Obituary

DONALD FLEMING, age 79, of Worthington, died, Sunday, September 4, 2011 at the Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington. He was born June 5, 1932 in Albert City, IA; to parents William E. and Esther E. (Swanson) Fleming. Don graduated from Albert City High School in 1950. He received his B.S. Degree in Farm Operation at Iowa State University. Don achieved his Masters Degree at the University of Northern Iowa and also earned a degree as an Education Specialist. He also achieved his PhD in Educational Administration at Iowa State University.
Don was united in marriage to Carol Larsen on March 5, 1960 at the Alcorn Lutheran Church in Alcorn, IA. They lived in LeMars, IA and he was a youth assistant for Plymouth County Extension Office. In 1962, they moved to Conrad, IA; where he was a teacher/counselor. In 1965, they moved to Marshalltown, IA; and he worked as a Counselor and Dean of Students at Marshalltown Community College. In 1988 they moved to Worthington and he was Dean of Students at Minnesota West Community College in Worthington.
Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Marshalltown, IA and then American Lutheran Church, Worthington and served on church council and other committees. He was also a Kiwanis member in Marshalltown and also in Worthington.
Don was awarded the Marshalltown Area Chamber of   Commerce Award in 1987 and served as President of Mid Iowa Antique Power Association. He also served on the Worthington water and light commission. His hobbies included photography, John Deere tractors and he enjoyed being an amateur ham radio operator.
Don is survived by his wife, Carol Fleming, Worthington; children, Cory Fleming, Westbrook, ME; and Duane Fleming, Hartford, SD; grandson, Tyler Fleming, Sioux Falls, SD; brother, William D. (Joan) Fleming, Eagan, MN; sister, Kathryn Ehlen, Bloomington, MN; sister-in-law, Marilyn Hansen and brother-in-law, David (Bernice) Larsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law, Henry Ehlen and Ivan Hansen.
