DORIS (BRUXVOORT) VAN SURKSUM, age 90, of Leota, died Friday, February 3, 2012, at the Pipestone County Medical Center. She was born April 16, 1920, in Crookston, to Malis and Gertie (Williamson) Bruxvoort. In 1927, she moved with her parents to a farm near Chandler.
Doris married Gerrit Van Surksum on December 21, 1939. Throughout their married life, they farmed in the Leota area until 1976, when they built a home and moved into Leota. Gerrit died in 1991. Doris continued to live in Leota until October of 2003, when she became a resident of Edgebrook. In August of 2005, she moved into the Assisted Living at the Edgebrook Campus. On June 1, 2011, she moved back into the Edgebrook Care Center. Doris was taken to the Pipestone Medical Center on January 28, 2012.
She was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, embroidering, & baking. In her later years, she enjoyed Word Search and playing Rummikeb.
Doris is survived by her five children, Harold (Garneth) Van Surksum, Luverne; Marlene Hofkamp, Leota; Roger (Becci) Van Surksum, Alexandria; Verla (David) Dodgen, Luverne; and Gordon (Reymie) Van Surksum, Mission Viejo, CA; nineteen grandchildren; thirty seven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Van Ruler, Long Prairie; three brothers, Leonard Bruxvoort, Luverne; Marvin Bruxvoort, Edmond, OK; and Gerald Bruxvoort, Worthington; and two sisters-in-law, Vi Bruxvoort, Worthington; and Audrey Bruxvoort, Chandler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerrit; son-in-law, John Hofkamp; grandson, Mike Hofkamp; two brothers, Donald & Leroy Bruxvoort; three sisters, Ardella Doppenberg, Evelyn Moret & Luella Utke; and two infant sisters.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral will be 10:30 AM Tuesday at the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota. Burial will be in the Leota Community Cemetery.
The Dingmann Funeral Home, in Adrian, and the Leota Burial Association are in charge of arrangements.
