DOROTHY BERTHINE HAY, age 90, of Worthington and formerly of Ortonville, died, Saturday, October 16, 2010. Dorothy passed away peacefully at the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington. She was born to Carl and Bena Regina (Saltee) Pries on April 21, 1920, in Canby, MN in her grandmother Saltee?s home. She was their only child. She was confirmed at Our Savior?s Lutheran Church in Canby and graduated from Canby High School in 1938. She attended Normal Teacher?s Training and taught for two years at the country school near the Marble Store Corner, south of Canby. She met Lowell Hay from Taunton, MN when he was 17 and she was 15 on the church steps, by the old post office in Canby. They were sweethearts from then on until they married October 15, 1941 in Canby. After they were married they moved to Ortonville where they lived for 57 years. On May 31, 1947, their only child Margaret Ann Hay (Mag McCuen) was born in the Ortonville hospital. On April 11, 1977 Stephanie Kay McCuen (Kowalski), their only grandchild was born in Worthington, MN. Dorothy was an avid and excellent seamstress, cook, bridge player and craft maker. She loved music, loved to read, travel, belonging to clubs, working in the church, fashion, bowling, golfing, fishing, knitting, baking, water skiing, swimming, riding bike, shopping, entertaining, movies and dancing. She and Lowell were known for their dancing. Dorothy belonged to Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron and a state Grand Page. She also belonged to Study Club, three bridge clubs and Hobby Club. She belonged to First English Lutheran Church?s women?s circle, was the president of the women?s group, there and on many other church committees, including chairing the Norwegian Festival. She was a Brownie Scout and Girl Scout Leader for several years. She was chair and Charter Member of the Hospital Auxiliary group that rebuilt the Ortonville hospital after the 1952 explosion. She was on the Ortonville School Board for 6 years. She was one of the organizers of her high school reunions up through their 50th. In Ortonville she was a bookkeeper for the Schoen/Ekelund Furniture Store for three years and for Habicht?s Department Store for three years. Dorothy was office manager and bookkeeper for Harry Speckeen for four years, was interim-superintendent for the Big Stone County Schools for one year. Her favorite jobs were homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She and Lowell spent many years going to Florida and Arizona starting in the 60?s to 1990. They lived for six months of the year in Sierra Vista, AZ for four years and Mesa, AZ for five years in the early 1980?s to 1990. They moved on March 11, 1998 to Worthington on Lake Street, then on July 6, 2004 to Golden Horizons, then Dorothy became a resident of Crossroads Care Center on March 27, 2007. Dorothy had a great sense of humor. She loved to hear and tell jokes, and laugh. She loved accompanying Lowell to all of his business meetings in the Cities and all over the region and states. She always comforted family when in strife with her words, ?Well, there?s a reason for everything and Thy will be done.? She will be missed by her family and friends. She loved life to the fullest and had a very strong faith. She had a way of making everyone feel good, welcome and appreciated. She gave so much to her family, friends and community. She will be waiting in heaven to dance with Lowell to her favorite songs String of Pearls and Mack the Knife. Dorothy and Lowell celebrated their 69th anniversary October 15, 2010. Dorothy is survived by her husband Lowell Hay, Worthington, MN; daughter, Margaret Ann (Mag) and son-in-law Steven McCuen, Worthington, MN; granddaughter, Stephanie and her husband Timothy Kowalski, Waukegan, IL; godchild, Lisa Beth Gustafson Hoftiezer her husband Rick of Luverne, MN; sister-in-law, Lucille Hay; niece, Janeen Taveirne and her sons Tyler and Ross all of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents, nephew, Randy Fostvedt and brother-in-law, Donald Hay.
