Duane Burdell Fish, age 83, of Worthington, died February 7, 2011 at Hospice of Arizona. He was born November 15, 1927 in Brookings, South Dakota, to Thomas Henry and Vera Merle (Jones) Fish. He attended a one room rural school through 8th grade then went on to Brookings High School, graduating in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, pre-flight, during World War II and was stationed at Valley City, N.D. At the war?s end he went back to civilian life and college. Duane graduated from South Dakota State University and married Lorna Dobie in 1949. Duane taught at Castlewood, S.D. from 1950-1952. He went to Clear Lake, S.D. in 1953 as Senior High Principal. He got his Master?s Degree in Education in 1956 from SDSU. He moved to Worthington in 1957 and taught math and science. He attended Mankato State, Kansas State, and the University of Wyoming to get certified as a guidance counselor. He was very active in the early counseling movement and served as President of the MN Counselor?s Association for 2 years. He also served on the MN State Human Rights Commission and advisory board for Jackson and Pipestone area Vo Techs for a number of years. After a successful and rewarding career of touching many lives as a counselor, teacher, and coach, he retired in 1990 from the Worthington Senior High. Sports were a major influence in Duane?s life. At an early age he became involved in baseball, swimming, and diving. In Brookings, he played baseball on the American Legion Team and the City team in the early 40?s. He lettered in football, basketball and track all 3 years of high school and was the basketball team captain his senior year. He played football at SDSU in 1946 and 1947. He played amateur and semi- pro baseball in the late 40?s and early 50?s. In Castlewood, he had the unique experience of starting the football program. Pre-television, only one player had ever seen a football game. He continued his connection with sports by officiating football and basketball games in southwest MN during the 50?s and 60?s. His passion for sports included not only team sports but a lifelong love of golf. His prowess as a golfer was a constant throughout his life, with occasional hunting and fishing trips for variety. In 1975 Duane married Carmen Lee. They would spend the next 35 years together golfing, traveling and enjoying life fully. They became snowbirds in 1999 and spent winters in Sun City, AZ. Duane was a member of the Worthington Country Club since 1957, as a golf devotee. Carmen and Duane added Sun City South Golf Course to their lives in 1999. Duane greatly enjoyed his time there, playing some of the best golf of his life with the Sandbaggers and many other friends. He enjoyed a hole in one at age 80, and routinely ?shot his age.? Outside of golf, he was a member of American Lutheran Church, P.E.R. of the Elk?s Lodge, American Legion and Eagles. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Vivian Keck. Duane is survived by his wife, Carmen, son Tomas, (Sandie) of St. Peter MN with grandsons Scott (Andrea) and Jeff, daughter Patti Jo (John) of Maple Plain MN with grandsons Andy (Amy) and Pete, and great granddaughter Lucy; two nephews, Jim (Janet) Keck and Bob (Gladys) Keck,and niece Nancy (Larry) Wasmund.
