Obituary

EDITH E. UMLAND, age 94, of Luverne, died Monday, December 15, 2008, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne. She was born October 3, 1914, in Sioux Center, IA, to Jesse and Francis (Griffin) Ross. She attended Dist. #73 country school near Luverne. Edith was baptized on July 6 and confirmed on July 10, 1938, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Edith married Otto Umland on December 29, 1937, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. After their marriage, the couple farmed south of Magnolia. In 1980, they had a farm sale and moved to Luverne. Edith was admitted to the Sanford Luverne Hospital on November 11; and became a resident of the Sanford Hospice Cottage on November 19. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne; the Ladies Circle; and the Luverne Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing cards & games, quilting, crocheting (which she won several purple ribbons at the fair) gardening, traveling, going out to eat and especially spending time with her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Edith is survived by her two daughters, Audrey (Keith) Aanenson, Luverne; and Barb Elcock, Worthing, SD; eight grandchildren, Scott (Sandy) Elcock, Corey (Kyle) Aanenson, Carrie (Rick) VanSanten, Sheila (Ron) Johannes, Shellene (Brian) Smidt, Sondra (Dave) Hladky, Stephanie (Corrie) Alexander and Suzette (Jimmy) Brandsrud; twenty five great grandchildren, Brad, Derek, Austin & Jake VanSanten, Mitchell, Mikayla & Josh Johannes, Monique, Landon & Maiah Aanenson, Payton, Preston, Paxton & Jessica Nordmann, Samantha & Cody Hladky, Isaiah, Austin, Bobby, Kadin, Reese & Sierra Smidt, and Alyssa, Addyson & Dylan Brandsrud; sister, Myrtle Gehrke, Luverne; and two sisters-in-law, Augusta Ross, Pipestone; and Dena Umland, Hills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in 1983; seven brothers, Clarence, Walter, Melvin, Alfred, Oscar, Lawrence & Floyd Ross; and four sisters, Ethel Ward, Flora Larson, Grace Vaughn & Cora Gehrke.
