Ellen Mary Vortherms

ELLEN MARY VORTHERMS, age 93, of Wilmont, died Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington. She was born April 23, 1933, in Hospers, IA, to William “Bill” and Petronella “Nellie” (Stapenhorst) Jungers.

Ellen married Sylvester Vortherms on February 17, 1955, in Hospers, IA. Together, they built a life on their farm near Wilmont, working side by side while raising their seven children. In her later years, Ellen treasured time with the generations that followed as their family grew to include 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.

After raising her own children, she touched the lives of many children that were entrusted to her care.

She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Wilmont quilting group.

Her deep love for the Lord was the foundation of her life. Her faith, devotion to her family and love for those around her were a beautiful reflection of who she was. She had a deep love and passion for quilting, creating beautiful quilts that will forever be treasured by her family and loved ones.

Ellen is survived by her seven children, Patricia (Jim) Pospisil, Alexandria; Dale (Dee Rae) Vortherms, Spirit Lake, IA; Julie (Mark) Weber, St. Francis; Kenneth (Tammy) Vortherms, Winfield, MO; Mark (Jane) Vortherms, Avon; Keith (Lisa) Vortherms, St. Louis Park; and Carol Hystad, LeMars, IA; sixteen grandchildren; Jason (Katie) Pospisil, Amber Pospisil, Shawna (Scott) Wilde, Andrew (Breanna) Vortherms, Grant (Kari) Weber, Aleithia Weber, Seth (Brittany) Weber, Taylor Vortherms, Conor (Katie) Vortherms, Nathan (Kate) Vortherms, Christopher (Meagan) Vortherms, Caitlin (Jeremy) Hartmann, Rachel (fiancé, Jeff Rounds) Vortherms, Mitchell Vortherms, Danielle Hystad and Matthew (Nicole) Hystad; seventeen great-grandchildren; two on the way; brother, Danny Jungers, Sheldon, IA; and two sisters-in-law, Marlene Jungers, George, IA; and Bobbie Jungers, Delaware, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill & Nellie Jungers; husband, Sylvester; son-in-law, Dan Hystad; two brothers, Bernard and Arnie Jungers; and two sisters, Sr. Theresa Jungers OSF and Sr. Margaret Jungers OSF.

A time of fellowship will be Monday Aug. 17 from 4-7 pm, with Parish Prayers at 4 pm, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Wilmont. Visitation also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorial Mass will be Tuesday at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, in Wilmont, officiated by Monsignor Richard Colletti.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Sunset Hospice Cottages in Worthington or Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Wilmont.
