Ernest Joseph (Joe) Malone III, age 72 of Detroit Lakes, formerly of Luverne, departed this life peacefully at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes on June 27, 2007 with his family by his side, after a long battle with Pick's Disease. He was the only child of Dwight Patrick Malone and Helen Mabel Kane Malone. Joe was born on November 5, 1934 in Windom, MN. He moved to Luverne, MN as a young child, where he lived most of his life. Joe graduated from Luverne High School in 1952. He attended Macalaster College in St. Paul, MN for two years prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in Korea in the 5th Armored Division. Upon being honorably discharged, Joe returned to Luverne, MN and joined the family businesses. Joe served Southwest Minnesota as a farm manager and realtor for 42 years. He was an active participant in the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA). In addition to his management career, Joe also served as director of Northwestern State Bank and later served on the advisory board of First Farmers and Merchants National Banks. Joe was involved in many activities. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #123 and the VFW Post 2757. He was a member and past master of the Ben Franklin Lodge #114, Luverne, MN. He obtained the order of Knight Templar. He was a life member of the El Riad Shrine, Sioux Falls, SD and the Royal Order of Jesters. Joe was active at the Luverne Country Club and the Rock County Sportsmans Club, where he served as president and board member of both organizations. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Luverne. Throughout his life, Joe was an avid golfer, trapshooter and outdoorsman. He was a three time club champion and five time runner up at the Luverne Country Club. He was a lifetime member of the USGA. Joe enjoyed competing in registered amateur trapshoots and weekly league at Rock County Sportsmans Club, where he was a club champion. He was a life member of the Amateur Trapshooting Association, Sioux Trapshooting Association and the National Rifle Association. Joe loved the outdoors; especially hunting, fishing, conservation and touring the countryside. Joe was an active member of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the National Wild Turkey Federation. During the summer months Joe enjoyed spending time at his lake home in Alexandria, MN. Joe also had a great fondness for dogs, cats and wildlife. Joe is survived by his son, Jeffrey Malone of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter and son-in-law Karen and TJ Buboltz of Detroit Lakes, MN; grandson, Nicholas Malone Buboltz; ex-wife and friend Susan Malone of Detroit Lakes, MN; Aunt Helen Malone of Laguna Beach, CA and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved Aunt Lava Brooks and his father's and mother's brothers and sisters. Visitation will be Sunday July 1, 2007 from 6-8 pm with a Masonic Service at 7:30 pm at the Dingmann Funeral Home, Luverne. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley 1102 W River Road, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501 or El Riad Transportation Fund c/o El Riad Shrine 510 S Philllips Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104. The Funeral Service will be 11am, Monday July 2, 2007, at United Methodist Church in Luverne with Pastor Donn Rakow officiating. Burial with full military honors, provided by the Luverne VFW and the Luverne American Legion, will be at Maplewood Cemetery.
