EVELYN META BOOMGAARDEN, age 91, of Luverne, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center.  She was born February 5, 1923, in rural Benton County, MN, to Ernest and Dora (Lunzmann) Bartels. She graduated from Pipestone High School; and later from Mankato State Teachers College. She taught at rural schools in Pipestone County for three years.
Evelyn married Jake Boomgaarden on December 25, 1942, in Wichita Falls, TX. After their marriage, Jake returned to the Air Corp. Evelyn taught elementary school at Lincoln Elementary, in Sioux Falls, SD for ten years before the couple moved to Luverne. Evelyn taught at the Luverne Elementary School for over twenty three years before retiring in 1979.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne; the GLCW; the National Teachers Association; and the Minnesota Teachers Association. She enjoyed her sewing club and having coffee with friends.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Jake Boomgaarden, Luverne; daughter, Dr. Renee (Dr. Chris Hertler) Boomgaarden, Dickinson, ND; two grandchildren, Gabriel (Asha) Hertler, Brookings, SD; and Anna Hertler, Dickinson, ND; and two sisters-in-law, Norma (Lloyd) Schoenfeld, Clear Lake, SD; and Marles Bartels, Pipestone.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; two brothers, Ronald & Harvey Bartels; and a sister, Leona Priester.
A gathering of friends and family will be from 5-7pm Monday, April 14, 2014, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.  Memorial Service will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the Grace Lutheran Church, in Luverne, officiated by Rev. Joshua Enderson.  Burial of Cremains will be at Maplewood Cemetery.
