FRANCES PEARL DROST, age 86, of Luverne, died Thursday, May 20, 2010, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born June 14, 1923, at her parents home near Canton, SD, in Lincoln County, to Peter and Caroline (Christopherson) Knutson. Frances attended public schools in the Canton area. Frances moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she was employed at Fenn?s Candy Company and also was a telephone switchboard operator for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Frances married Elmer Drost on December 17, 1944, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson, SD. After their marriage, the couple farmed west of Ellsworth. In 1955, they moved to the Drost family farm south of Luverne. In 1980, they retired from farming and moved to Luverne. Frances worked for over twenty three years at the Luverne Elementary School as a Dietary Aid. She enjoyed her job and loved being around the school children. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, in Luverne, and has been active in the life of the congregation where she taught Bible school, served on music, worship, hospitality, stewardship and Evangelism committees. She was secretary of Grace Lutheran Church women, circle President and served as deacon on the church council. She was also active in community affairs, doing many hours of volunteer work, she was a member and President of the hospital Pink Ladies, RSVP, Maplewood cemetery auxiliary, Vice President of the American Legion, Extension Club, Lions 92, and Tourist Club. She was also a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Frances was a talented self-taught musician who shared her piano playing with nursing homes in the community and several other organizations. She was also known for her sewing skills as she made many quilts for family and friends which started as a hobby and grew from that. Frances dearly loved her family. Survivors include three children, Twila (Evan) VerSteeg, Luverne; Gary (Debra) Drost, Luverne; and Gregg (Diane) Drost, Minnetonka; seven grandchildren, Tim VerSteeg, Tom (Alison) VerSteeg, Tami (Brian) Bergman, Kelly (Greg Krantz) Drost, Samantha Drost, Andrea Drost & Tim Drost; six great grandchildren, Cade, Lauren, Tyler, Kyle, Ross & Will; and a sister, Gladys (Charles) Hill, Canton, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer, in 1993; five brothers; and three sisters. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Friday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Luverne; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Funeral will be 1 PM Saturday at the Grace Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Gloria Anderson. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
