FREDA A. SPOELSTRA, age 84, of Worthington, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Sanford Regional Hospital in Worthington. She was born June 16, 1925 in rural Rushmore to parents, August A. E. and Helen (Johnson) Brunk. She attended country school in rural Rushmore. On March 14, 1944, Freda was united in marriage to Marvin Spoelstra at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore. The couple made their home in rural Rushmore. They were engaged in farming and Freda was also a homemaker. Marvin passed away on December 16, 1969. After his death, Freda acquired her high school diploma and received a degree in cosmetology from Stewart?s School of Cosmetology in Sioux Falls, SD. After her schooling Freda worked at Pearl?s Beauty Shop in Worthington. She was also a wig stylist, a Merle Norman Cosmetic distributor and was employed with Band Box Cleaners in Worthington. On November 2, 1973, Freda was united in marriage to John Spoelstra. The couple farmed in rural Rushmore until retiring in 1977. After retiring they moved to Worthington. They wintered in Arizona for fifteen years and enjoyed traveling. John passed away on November 14, 1993. Freda was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore from 1944 to 2008. In 2008 she became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Worthington. She was actively involved in Ladies Aid and Circle. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, embroidery, baking/preserving, canning, playing games and playing cards, especially pinochle. Freda is survived by her children, Merle (Janice) Spoelstra, Cushing, WI; Gordon (Jan) Spoelstra, Rushmore, MN; Ronald (LuAnn) Spoelstra, Minnetonka, MN; and Roberta (Gary) Klenken, Wilmont, MN; one step-daughter, Donna (Larry) Schut, Seminole, OK; thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren with two on the way; and two sisters-in-law, Rosella and Ardelle Brunk, Rushmore, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Marvin and John, siblings, Edward, Elmer, Marie, Edna, Arnold, Robert and Donald ?Bud? Brunk.
