GEORGE DeVRIES, age 86, of Round Lake, died Saturday, September 1, 2012, at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington. He was born April 29, 1926, in Boyden, IA, to Gerrit and Alice (Hoogland) DeVries. He attended country school near Boyden & Orange City, IA.
George married Sadie DeBoom on December 11, 1947, in Orange City, IA. In January of 1948, the couple moved to the family farm southeast of Round Lake. George & Sadie built their own home in Round Lake in 1968. George also worked for Gerdes Construction in Lake Park, IA. He later began working at Campbell's Soup Company, in Worthington, for over twenty years before retiring in 1988. He became a resident of the South Shore Care Center in January of 2011.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Round Lake; and volunteered at the Worthington Mission Store. He will be remembered as a quiet,kind,compassionate man-devoted to his family and his God. He enjoyed saw sharpening; and woodworking- especially making toys for his grandchildren-who were very special to him.
George is survived by his wife, Sadie DeVries, Round Lake; three children, Glen DeVries, Harris, IA; Marvin (special friend, Glenda) DeVries, Harris, IA; and Curtis (Kathy) DeVries, Worthington; four grandchildren, Heidi (B.J.) Garms, Monterey, CA; Crystal (Kenny) Daniels, George, IA; Brian (Ali) DeVries, Jackson; and Michael (Kim) DeVries, Alpha; six great grandchildren, Garrett, Meredith, Jacob, Joanna, Michelle & Lane; three brothers, Alfred (Evelyn) DeVries, Sioux Center, IA; Harold (Joyce) DeVries, Hull, IA; and LeRoy (Betty) DeVries, Denver, CO; and two sisters, Alida Remes, Aurora, CO; and Emma DeJoode, Stanchfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Jeannette Buffington.
Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Wednesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, in Round Lake, officiated by Rev. Robert Bartlette. Burial will be in the Round Lake Cemetery.
