Obituary

GEORGE HOILAND GABRIELSON, age 92, of Luverne, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage. He was born November 7, 1917, in rural Rock Co. on a farm by the Rock River in Luverne Township, to Jens and Karen (Stolen) Gabrielson. George attended 4 East Country School in rural Rock County. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Montevideo, MN for three years. They returned to Luverne and George graduated from Luverne High School in 1937. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. George was stationed in Kodiak, AK and Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. The Ken Burns documentary, The War, included some of George?s home movie footage of his army days and life on the farm. George married Arna Helle on March 12, 1949, at the parsonage of J.O. Mundahl in Luverne. After their marriage, the couple farmed ?Under the Mounds? north of Luverne. In 1953, they moved to the farm south of Luverne. George also was a Farmers Union Insurance Agent for over 25 years. They retired and moved to Luverne in 1987. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne; a forty year member of the Luverne Lions Club, a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award; a member of the Luverne VFW and the Luverne American Legion; a founding member of the Farmers Union Co-op; a member of the board of directors of the Southwestern Minnesota Rural Electric Association; an RSVP volunteer driver; an enthusiastic member of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party; and he was the 1992 Rock County Outstanding Senior Citizen. George and Arna enjoyed traveling, and visited every state in the U.S. except Hawaii and also three trips to Norway. George is survived by his wife, Arna, Luverne; two daughters, Linda (Harlan) Smith, Greenfield, MA; and Lona (Don) Klosterbuer, Luverne; six grandchildren, Simon (Emily Letts) Smith, Carl (fianc?e, Nicole Cohen) Smith, Nicholas Smith, Benjamin Smith, Sarah Klosterbuer & Abby Klosterbuer; three sisters-in-law, Audrey Gabrielson, Olga Gabrielson & Florence Helle, several nieces, nephews, great nieces & great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John & Russell Gabrielson; an infant sister; and a sister, Jennie Vestlie.
