Weiland
September 15, 1927 – March 19, 2020
GEORGE WALTER WEILAND, age 92, of Worthington, died Thursday, March 19, 2020, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington. He was born September 15, 1927, in Ashton, SD, to Charles and Laura (Kurth) Weiland. George served his country in the United States Navy during WWII; and he marched in the Independence Parade, in the Philippians, on July 4, 1946.
George married Delores "Dee" Strege on September 18, 1950, in Redfield, SD. After their marriage, the couple lived in Redfield before moving to Lead, SD where George worked at the Black Hills Gold Mine. In 1951, they moved to Pierre, SD where George began working at J.C. Penny. In 1962, they moved to Fremont, NE and later to Millard, NE. They moved to Worthington in February of 1966 where George worked at Koppy Motors. He also worked at the Southwest Opportunity Council as a custodian and bus driver. George umpired softball games for over twenty five years. During those twenty five years, both sons & granddaughter, Ruth became umpires.
He was an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Worthington where he served as an Usher and he received an appreciation plaque. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and watching the Minnesota Twins & Vikings.
George is survived by his wife, Dee Weiland, Worthington; three children, Lenai Engler, Worthington; George "Pat" Weiland, Decatur, NE; and Michael (Gynelle) Weiland, Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Brenda (Robert) Vortherms, Amber (Phillip) Joens, Ruth Weiland, William (Ashley) Weiland and Taylor Weiland; four great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Tarryn, Brandt and Savannah; and a sister, Le Nora Shephard, Puyallup, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Steven Engler; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Weiland; four brothers, Art, Clayton, Melvin and Raymond Weiland; and two sisters, Anna and Margaret Jungwirth.
A memorial service will take place at 10:30 am Thursday, July 30, at the American Lutheran Church, in Worthington, officiated by Pastor Steve Olson. Burial with full military honors provided by the Worthington American Legion & VFW, will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
