GERALD R. PICK, age 66, of Luverne, passed from this world into the hands of the Lord on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls surrounded by his family. He was born on December 21, 1946 in Adrian, MN to Raphael and Margaret (Gleis) Pick. He attended school at St. Anthony Catholic School in Lismore, Kenneth school through the eighth grade and graduated from Magnolia High School in 1964. Gerald then served his nation in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict in 1966 and 1967. He was enlisted in the 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry, where he received his small engine repair training and was medaled as an expert rifleman.
On June 28, 1969 he was united in marriage to Margaret Madison at St. Adrian Catholic Church in Adrian. Jerry and Margaret made their home in Luverne and were blessed with four children. He was employed for the Rock County Implement Allis-Chalmers dealership for twenty years. He later worked for the City of Luverne Public Works Department until retiring in 2011. Jerry was diagnosed with leukemia (CLL) in May of 2007 and had a stem cell transplant on January 22, 2013 donated from his brother Dale. Although the stem cell transplant successfully eliminated his cancer, his immune system did not recover.
He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne and the Knights of Columbus. Jerry enjoyed restoring Allis-Chalmers tractors, woodworking, cabinetry, summer vacations and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife of forty-four years to the date, Margaret, Luverne, MN; four children, Steven (Jennifer) Pick, Spencer, IA; Kevin (Nicole) Pick, Sioux Falls, SD; Brian (Renae) Pick, Luverne, MN; and Joleen (Rick) Mueller, Mitchell, SD; eight grandchildren (with number nine due in January), Kaylee, Madison, Carson, Spencer, Ashton, Mason, Reagen and Kennedy, four siblings, Dennis (Deanna) Pick, Kenneth, MN; Linda (Gerald) Schmuck, Gulfport, MS; Dale (Lori) Pick, Luverne, MN; and Diane (Dennis) Strassburg, Magnolia, MN;
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. Visitation will also be an hour prior to the service. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 AM at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
