GERALDINE GRACE HOFTYZER, age 84, of Worthington, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born April 24, 1928, in Rock Rapids, IA, to George and Elizabeth (Reemts) Brouer. At the age of five, Geraldine moved with her parents to a farm south of Worthington. She attended school in Bigelow for a few years before graduating from Worthington High School in 1946. Geraldine worked as a sales clerk at Ben Franklin from 1947 to 1948. She then worked at Schafer's Market from 1949 to 1955.
Geraldine married Henry Hoftyzer on August 30, 1955, in Worthington. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Hartley, IA. In 1961, they moved to Worthington and helped farmers in the area for a few years. Geraldine also worked at Wolff's Department Store from 1966 to 1986 where she bought merchandise for the dry goods department. The couple also served as custodians at the Christian Reformed Church in Worthington from 1976 to 1990, before retiring.
She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Worthington; and the Christian Fellowship Circle. She enjoyed photography, the Minnesota Twins and reading. She always remembered her grandchildren's birthdays with a card and a gift of money.
Geraldine is survived by her three children, Linda (Scott) Hansen, Woodland Park, CO; Duane (Jacque) Hoftyzer, Colorado Springs, CO; and Connie (Mike) Kendall, Eden Prairie; ten grandchildren, John (Jessica) Fildes, Hank (Shannon) Fildes, Brook Hansen, Anna Hoftyzer, Josh Stinton, Shane Hoftyzer, Seth Hoftyzer, Cameron Hoftyzer, Ashley Kendall & Erika Kendall; three great grandchildren, Annie, Joshua & Hunter Fildes; and a brother, Virgil (Hazel) Brouer, Andover.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry, on February 20, 2001; an infant daughter, Janice Mae; and a brother, Edward Brouer.
Visitation will be 5-7 pm Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Funeral will be 11 am Wednesday at the Christian Reformed Church, in Worthington, officiated by Rev. Adam Eisenga. Burial will be in the Ocheyedan Cemetery in Ocheyedan, IA.
