GORDON (GORDY) ALMBERG, age 89, of Rushmore, died Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN. He was born December 31, 1916 in Kiester, MN; to his parents Lewis and Clara (Thorgerson) Almberg. Gordy was in the first graduating class at Kiester, MN in 1931. He also attended the University of Minnesota Agricultural School. After his schooling he ran a poultry produce in Alden, Dexter and also in Kiester, MN. Gordy served his country during World War II; entering the service on February 10, 1941. He was a tank destroyer; serving in the European Theater. He also participated in the Normandy Invasion at Utah Beach. Gordy received an honorable discharge from the United States Army on July 4, 1945. He moved to Worthington on November 29, 1949 and was employed at the C.A. Swanson Company in Worthington. Gordy was united in marriage to Phyllis Fredrickson on August 11, 1951 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington. They lived in and around Worthington and worked as a USDA Poultry Inspector; retiring in 1977 after 30 years of service. Gordy was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, the American Legion and the Worthington Country Club for 53 years. Gordy enjoyed his life to the fullest. He loved his wife and family and was very proud of his grandchildren, Evan and Lucia. He stayed busy and active on the farm after his retirement. He loved golf, and played as often as he could. He got his first of three holes-in-one when he was 79 years old! Gordy loved being outdoors and last year, he grew an 86.5 lb. watermelon that he was especially proud of.? We will remember him for his quick wit and detailed story telling. Gordy greeted each day with positive outlook and was an inspiration to his family and to all who knew and loved him.? He has truly been?a life lesson for us all. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Almberg, Rushmore; children, Kristy (Bill) Petrich, Afton, MN and Brian (Jodi) Almberg, Worthington and two grandchildren, Evan Almberg and Lucia Petrich. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. Blessed Be His Memory.
