HARVEY EDWARD KEMERLING, age 77, of Luverne, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage, in Luverne, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born May 28, 1934, in Magnolia, to Henry and Nora (Hamann) Kemerling. In 1942, the family moved to the farm northwest of Luverne, where Harvey lived the rest of his life. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1953.
Harvey enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1953 with two of his buddies. The majority of his service time was spent in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1955.
Harvey married Doris Loger on December 16, 1956, in Luverne. They farmed until 1971. In 1971, he entered into a business partnership, with Bob Zinnel, forming Rock County Implement selling Allis Chalmers and other farm equipment. He remained in the business until 1993. He was proud of his "Big Orange" tractors. After the closing of the business, Harvey worked for several farmers in Rock County before getting a job in the fertilizer department of Farmers Union Coop Oil. He worked there until health issues forced his retirement in 2010.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne; the Luverne VFW Post 2757, where he had served as Past Commander; the American Legion Post 131; and the Luverne Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3403. He enjoyed working on old tractors, radio-controlled model airplanes, hunting, fishing, traveling, and helping others. Everyone that knew Harvey knows he also enjoyed a cold Old Milwaukee.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Doris Kemerling, Luverne; five children, Lynette Kemerling, Luverne; Harland "Duck" (Karen) Kemerling, Granite Falls; Dave Kemerling, Watertown, SD; Larry Kemerling, Sioux Falls, SD; and Craig (Terri) Kemerling, Garretson, SD; eight grandchildren, Eric (Stacy) Kemerling, Fargo, ND; Jonathan Kloos, Granite Falls; Paul Kloos, Brookings, SD; Kameron & Mikiya Kemerling, Kandiyohi; and Dirk, Drew & Rylee Radke, Utica, IL; and three sisters, Dorothy (Kurt) Petersen, Luverne; Norma Schneekloth, Luverne; and Elaine Mann, Luverne.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and several brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law.
