Obituary

Herman, "Buddie" Virgil Richter, age 90 of Brewster, died Tuesday February 18, 2025 at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center.  He was born January 20, 1935 in Jackson County, to Herman and Irma (Dunse) Richter. Our Dad married our mom, Sylvia Meyer, on June 13, 1954 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster.  They were lucky enough to celebrate their 70th Anniversary last year.

Dad and mom farmed for a short time in rural Windom and moved to Brewster in 1955.  Dad was a farmer by trade and a true craftsman and fisherman in his heart. Dad farmed and we were often told that "he was one of the strongest men" they'd ever seen.  He would ask us girls for help, but we know we weren't much help when it came to moving an elevator.

Our whole family attended church at Trinity Lutheran in Brewster. Dad served as an Elder and Trustee and was also on the finance board. Dad also worked for decades at the ASCS office in Worthington measuring grain. Dad enjoyed many hobbies. He and our mom loved to go dancing every Saturday night, and for years, followed their favorite band, "The Country Yanks".

Our Dad was a voracious reader.  You could often find him at the kitchen table or in his favorite chair with a book in his hand.  It didn't matter what genre of book he read, he loved them all. Through his reading, he gained extensive knowledge of many subjects.  He loved to garden. Most years he had at least three separate gardens. He could grow vegetables that were talked about, and enjoyed by family and many friends.

There was nothing he couldn't build or concoct a remedy for.  From building smokers, fish houses and shelving! He made lots of walnut recipe boxes, carved walnut spoons for us girls!  He made card holders, marble games and toy boxes for the grandkids.

He played cards all his life and loved a good hand of pinochle, 500 or cribbage and you could find him daily playing solitaire.

Dad often went deer hunting, but his favorite sport was FISHING! By shore, boat or on the ice, dad would spend every spare minute fishing. Dad traveled to Canada, the Dakotas and all over the MN/IA area. As kids, he took us fishing and then later our husbands and grandkids.

We often hear people say, "you have the sweetest Dad". He had a sweet gentle demeanor and never wanted to be a bother-of course us girls were never perfect, but we do not ever remember him losing his patience, He leaves a big void in our lives.  We love you Dad.

Buddie is survived by 4 daughters. Deb (Gordy) VanDeVenter, Oakes ND, Rhonda (Brian) Ferguson, Heron Lake, Laura (Mike) Bourquin, Brewster, Amy (Mitch) Fossey, Lake Elmo, MN.
