Obituary

James Roberts Hommen, age 59, died on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, West Virginia. Jim was born on January 11, 1952 to Ole and Ruth (Roberts) Hommen at the Luverne Community Hospital in Luverne, Minnesota. He spent much of his time with his grandparents at the Rock County Sheriff?fs Office when Neil was Sheriff. His family moved into the Sheriff?fs Office residence when his father, Ole, became Sheriff. Throughout his youth, Jim enjoyed boys scouts, baseball and football, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Jim attended the Luverne Public Schools and graduated in 1970. Jim enjoyed Student Council and his interest was in English and literature. He had a passion for reading books. He attended college for two years at Southwest State in Marshall, Minnesota and a year at Mankato State College, Mankato, Minnesota. Following his education, Jim moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and became employed by Wicks Furniture. Jim had a long and colorful career, from working in Houston, Texas during the ?goil industry?h years to working with a traveling carnival with his good friends, Tom Skattum and Rick Serie. While in Houston, Jim started his career with Hertz Corporation and was promoted and transferred to Los Angeles, California after a few years. Jim quickly became recognized as a future leader within the industry and was sought after by Avis Rent A Car and moved to Denver, Colorado. After a successful career in Denver, Jim was promoted and transferred to Los Angeles as a Regional Sales Manager; then National Accounts Manager handling the business of Fortune 100 corporations based in the West. After 15 years with Avis, Jim was promoted in 1998 to Director of Group Sales, Association Market based in Washington, D.C. Jim married Judy Kayano while both were working at Hertz Corporation in Los Angeles. They were married on May 28, 1988 in Luverne, at the home of his grandparents, Jessie and Neil Roberts. Even though Jim and Judy divorced in 1996, they remained close friends. Jim married Terri Zimmerman on December 27, 2000 in Charleston, West Virginia. After his career with Avis, Jim and Terri moved to Terri?fs hometown, Charleston, West Virginia where Jim became a huge fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers football team. Jim loved his Labrador Retriever dogs, Harley and Ebony. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Terri Zimmerman of Charleston, West Virginia; one sibling, Jack and his wife Pamela Hommen of Fargo; a niece, Alicia (Randy) McCullum of Eagan, Minnesota and a nephew, Andrew (Nikki) Hommen of Avon, Minnesota; five great?]nieces and great?]nephews, Brandon and Molly Hommen, and Jackson, Madison and Tyson McCullum. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Ruth Hommen, and grandparents, Neil and Jessie (Martin) Roberts, and Ole O. and Lena (Stensland) Hommen Barstad. In lieu of flowers, we would prefer donations to the Sanford Hospice Cottage, the First Presbyterian Church, or the Luverne Alumni Newsletter. The memorial service will be 11 am Saturday, March 19, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, Luverne. Visitation will be 10?]11 am at the church in Luverne.
