Obituary

JAMES GILMORE SANDSTEDE, age 76, of Luverne, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne.  He was born March 29, 1945, in Luverne, to Melvin and Florence (Taubert) Sandstede.  He graduated from Hills High School in 1963.  Growing up, James learned to be a mechanic from his father who owned his own Full-Service Station in Steen.   James joined the U.S. Navy after graduating high school where he served during the Vietnam War.  He held several different positions while serving on the Assigned Aircraft Carrier after he completed his required training.  He was a hard charger and progressed through the ranks steadily until it was time for his discharge from the service.  James was offered the opportunity for promotion to the rank of Sergeant if he would stay for another tour.  He chose to take the honorable discharge so he could go home.     James had a family that he was wanting to start with the love of his life.  Geraldine Top was waiting for him to return so they could begin their long journey together.  They were married May 20, 1967.  They had four boys, Chad, Wade, Donny and Danny, that kept them busy and always kept them on their toes.    He enjoyed racing and working on race cars for many years.  James enjoyed hunting and fishing and just being outdoors.  He also liked working with his hands, especially woodworking and fixing anything.    James worked for Luverne Farm Store and later Ferrell Gas for many years before he started his own business.  He worked for the Luverne Police Department for several years as a reserve officer.    James is survived by his wife, Geraldine, Luverne; three sons, Chad, Alaska; Wade (Kathleen), Maple Grove; and Donny (Erin) Sandstede, Luverne; and three brothers, Larry, Merlyn and Kevin Sandstede.    He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Danny.

A time of fellowship will be Sunday, June 27, from 5-7 PM, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne.  A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
