JoAnn S. Nelson, age 60, of Worthington, died, Monday, September 5, 2011 at Sanford Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. She was born March 19, 1951 in Lakefield, MN; to parents Harley and Muriel (Swanson) Hanson. JoAnn graduated from Lakefield High School in 1968. After graduation she attended beauty school in Fairmont, MN.
JoAnn was united in marriage to John Nelson on March 29, 1969 at the American Lutheran Church in Windom, MN. During their marriage, JoAnn worked as a beautician in Worthington starting her career at the Fashion Lounge and then becoming the owner of the Silver Comb and the Cutting Corner. She continued her career renting a booth at Hairstyling On Main and most recently at the Hair Gallery. JoAnn also worked for the past five years for CCSI as overnight direct care staff.
JoAnn was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She had a passion for serving others and volunteered much of her time to church serving as a deacon, volunteer on a service unit, taught Sunday School, served on the Christian Education Board and at the time of her death was serving as an Elder. JoAnn loved her church family.
When she wasn't working, JoAnn enjoyed scrapbooking and knitting afghans for her grandchildren, golfing and fishing trips with her family. She loved "her girls" Sophie and Molly and she loved her family. She enjoyed being outdoors with them and following her grandchildren's activities. She was known as "Grandma Jo" to many.
JoAnn is survived by her husband, John Nelson, Worthington; her children, Teri (Randy) Reller, Worthington; and D.J. (Ang) Nelson, Adrian; her four grandchildren, Katie Reller, Jon Reller, Zane Nelson and Zachary Nelson; her mother, Muriel Hanson, Worthington and brother, Don (Laurie) Hanson, Menomonie, WI.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harley Hanson. .
