JOHN F. SCHAAP, age 89, of Worthington went home to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. He was born on May 1, 1925 in Leota, MN to parents Fredrick and Minnie (Van Dyke) Schaap. He attended school in Chandler and graduated in 1942. He served his nation during WWII in the U.S. Army.
On June 17, 1945, he was united in marriage to Helen J. Sneider in Alexandria, LA prior to his deployment to Japan. After being discharged from the service they lived in Sioux Center, IA and in 1951 they moved to Worthington. John started Schaap Plumbing and Heating and later purchased Schaap Sanitation from his father, Fred Schaap. After John retired, they spent many years wintering in Sun City, Arizona.
John was a member of the Worthington Christian Reformed Church which he served as an elder and a deacon. He also was a member of the Worthington Christian School Board. John loved his work. He also enjoyed going on mission trips, to help serve those in need. He also enjoyed golfing at Prairie View and various courses in Sun City.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Schaap, Worthington; two children, Ronald (Diane) Schaap, Rochester, MN; Verlyn (Carol) Schaap, Sioux City, IA; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) Sawyer, Emily (Jim) Hilleman, Kathleen (Travis) Yager, Matthew (Kate) Schaap, Charissa (Josh) Camping, Susan (Andrew) Bisson, Mark (Megan) Schaap, fifteen great-grandchildren, his "adopted" family, Juana and Randy Traylor and sons, one brother, Arthur (Lorraine) Schaap, Worthington, MN; five sisters, Gertrude (Dale) Eckerson, Worthington, MN; Martha (Jack) Stene, Sioux Falls, SD; Clara (Dennis) Berger, Worthington, MN; Mavis (Harley) Woltjer, Sioux Falls, SD, Marie (Paul) Derby, Spearfish, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Joyce and two sisters, Frieda and Hermina.
