Kathryn Mate Freid entered into the church triumphant on September 30, 2006. She was born on August 14, 1913 in Onarga, IL to parents Raymond and Drucie Ellen (Burson) Stephens. She lived 93 years in service to her Lord. Kathryn attended country school near Stacy, MN and graduated from North Branch High School on May 30, 1932. She was baptized and confirmed in her Christian faith on December 8, 1935 at Salem Lutheran Church near Stacy. She took business courses in evening school at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While participating in the social club, she met John William Freid of Eau Claire, WI who was a business student also. John and Kathryn were united in marriage on August 2, 1941. They were blessed with three children. During their marriage, they lived in Minneapolis, MN; Altoona, WI; Shawano, WI; and lastly moved to Windom, MN in 1958. They owned and operated the Blue Star Motel and Frederik Hotel in Windom. After the death of her husband on August 19, 1968, Kathryn continued to run the businesses until she retired in 1984. She then moved into a duplex in Worthington to be near her daughter. On September 2, 1994, Kathryn moved to the Sogge Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Windom following her strokes in July and August. She received kind and tender care for many years in her final home. Kathryn was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a wonderful supporter of all the activities in the lives of her children. In her early homemaking years, she took pride in her gardening, cooking, baking, and sewing. When her children married, she enjoyed visiting and vacationing with them and their families. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom and later in Worthington and loved to take part in church activities. Kathryn is survived by two sons, John Freid and wife Leanna of Virginia Beach, VA; David Freid and wife Carol of Maple Grove, MN; and one daughter, Kathy Smith of Worthington and her special friend Roger DeKam; five grandchildren, Dawn (Freid) and Jerome Reinitz; Damon Smith; Benjamin and Aaron Freid; and Nathan Freid; two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Danielle Reinitz. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; brothers, Robert and Ronald Stephens; and sisters, Jeanette Powell and Marjorie Hals.
