LARRY LEE JOHLFS, age 77, of Rushmore, died Monday, March 1, 2016, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born July 23, 1938, in Ocheyedan, IA, to Clarence and Frances (Gertsema) Johlfs. His first memories began in Kansas where his father was an oil well driller. In the 1940's, the family moved to Fulda where Larry's father bought out his father's insurance agency.
After graduated, Larry served his country in the United States Navy Sea Bees. He later joined the Army to finish his twenty years of service.
Larry married Marrvena Beckman in 1963. The couple lived in Maryland where Larry was stationed at Ft. Mead. The couple divorced in 1973. Larry was then stationed at Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA. In August of 1986, Larry retired from the Army and moved to Fulda.
He enjoyed coin collecting and hunting.
Larry is survived by his two daughters, Amber (Paul) Engelkes, Rushmore; and Misty (Eric) Sommerness, Prior Lake; five grandchildren, Nate (Hannah) Engelkes, Little Rock, IA; Preston (Dianna) Engelkes, Edgerton; Dalton (Sarah) Engelkes, Hills; Autumn (special friend, Tucker) Engelkes, Tabor; and Gavin Engelkes, Rushmore; four great grandchildren, Noah, Gibson, Elliot & Griffin; and a brother, Wally (Midge) Johlfs, Fulda.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandchildren, Morgan & Wyatt Engelkes.
A time of fellowship will be from 11:30 am to Noon on Saturday at the American Legion Club in Fulda. A memorial service will be 12 Noon at the American Legion Club, in Fulda, with a lunch to follow.
Dingmann Funeral Home & Cremation Services, in Adrian, is assisting the family with arrangements.
