LEON JOSEPH SCHAFER, age 90, of Worthington, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN. He was born on April 3, 1920 near Fulda, MN. He was the son of William & Margaret (Vandenbergh) Schafer. Leon attended rural schools and St. Gabriel?s Catholic School in Fulda and also attended a semester at the University of Minnesota Farm School in St. Paul, MN. He married Lorraine Wagner on November 12, 1941 at St. Ann?s Catholic Church in Slayton, MN. Leon and Lorraine farmed near Currie, MN; until Leon entered the United States Army on April 18, 1942. Leon was stationed at several army bases state side before going overseas in July, 1944. Leon was a tank commander of the 817 tank destroyer battalion in Germany and France. Leon was honorably discharged December 14, 1945. Leon and Lorraine farmed in Murray County until 1954 which at that time they moved and continued farming near Round Lake, MN. Leon served on the Jackson County ASCS committee and a township board for several years. He was a member of the Round Lake American Legion and the VFW Post in Worthington. He was also a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN. Leon and Lorraine retired from farming in 1996 and moved to Worthington in 2002. Leon became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN, in October of 2005. Leon enjoyed farming, his family, music, dancing and sports. Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Lorraine Schafer, Worthington; five children, Barb (Gaylord) Ahrens, Rockford, MN; Bradley (Dianne) Schafer, Burnsville, MN; Nancy (Richard) Hartman, Burnsville, MN; Dan (Joan) Schafer, Rosemount, MN; and Mike (Kim) Schafer, Minnetonka, MN; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, one brother, Harold (Bernice) Schafer, Slayton, MN; and one sister, Arleen (Ron) Blair Citrus Heights, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Leon?s family wishes to sincerely thank the entire staff of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne for their kindness and wonderful care while he was a resident. May He Rest In Peace.
