LORETTA SPARTZ, age 99, of Adrian, died Sunday, December 14, 2014, at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center. She was born July 12, 1915, in St. Kilian, to Albert and Josephine (Vaske) Johanning. She attended country school near St. Kilian.
Loretta married Herb Spartz on August 30, 1938, at St. Kilian Catholic Church. After their marriage, the couple lived in Wilmont. In 1948, the couple moved to Adrian where Herb took over the Standard Oil Agency from Russell Nelson. Loretta worked with her husband at the agency and the gas station. Herb died on October 11, 1965. Loretta began working as a custodian at the St. Adrian Catholic School. She continued to work there after the public school bought the building in 1973. She retired on August 31, 1986.
She was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Church; the WCCW; and the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed Bingo, playing cards & scratch offs; flowers, decorating and especially baking pies.
Loretta is survived by her eight children, James (Faye) Spartz, Camden, DE; Elmer (Joanne) Spartz, Alamo, CA; Gordon (Ginny) Spartz, Edina; LuAnn (Ron) Reisdorfer, Adrian; Marcy VanValkenburg, Elk River; Cindy (Tom) Sieve, Reading; Mary Vortherms, Sioux Falls, SD; and Sue (Tony) Paulzine, Iona; twenty grandchildren; forty five great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and a sister, Coletta Lonneman, St. Kilian.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, in 1945; two great grandchildren, Wyatt Reisdorfer & Lincoln Paulzine; two sons-in-law, Doug Hagen & Rob VanValkenburg; eight brothers; and one sister.
Visitation will be from 4-8pm Wednesday, with parish prayers at 4pm, at the Dingmann funeral Home in Adrian. Visitation also from 9:30 to 10:15 am at the Funeral home on Thursday. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Thursday at St. Adrian Catholic Church, officiated by Fr. Andrew Beerman. Burial will be in the St. Adrian Cemetery.
