LORRAINE M. VANPEURSEM, age 86, of Adrian, died Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne. She was born March 2, 1922, on the family farm in rural Adrian, to Henry and Louise (Farwick) Berning. She attended country school in Lismore Township. Lorraine married Ralph VanPeursem on June 1, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, in Nassau, IA. After their marriage, the couple lived in Lismore. In 1955, they moved to the farm in rural Magnolia. Lorraine worked at Safeway, in Adrian, from 1966 to 1970. The couple moved to Magnolia in 1986. After Ralph died in 1994, Lorraine moved to Adrian before moving to the Centennial Apartments, in Luverne, in 2006. In September of 2008, she became a resident of the Arnold Memorial Nursing Home in Adrian. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lismore. For many years, Lorraine made rugs for area churches and individuals. She enjoyed gardening and traveling to casinos. Lorraine is survived by her two daughters, Judy Hoogland, Watertown, MN; and Joan (Leo) Hendel, Adrian; six grandchildren, Jerry Hoogland, Joel Hoogland, Vickie (Craig) DeBates, Curt Hendel, Mike (Kelly) Hendel and Michelle (Clint) Corey; ten great grandchildren, Joshua, Jason & Jennifer Hoogland; Cory & Kyle DeBates; Ashley, Haley & Zachary Hendel; and Nicholas & Alex Hendel; four brothers, George (Doris) Berning, Luverne; Alvin (Gert) Berning, Adrian; Ed (Dolores) Berning, Adrian; and Jim (Rita) Berning, Owatonna; sister, Marie Smeins, Luverne; and many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph, in 1994; son-in-law, Jim Hoogland; infant grandson, John Hoogland; and a brother-in-law, Myron Smeins.
