Obituary

LOWELL HENRY HAY, age 92, of Worthington, formerly of Ortonville, died Monday, December 6, 2010 at Crossroads Care Center in Worthington. He was born July 19, 1918, in Lyon County, MN at the Marshall Hospital to parents Horace and Rose (Shimek) Hay. Lowell grew up in Taunton, MN and graduated from Minneota High School in 1937. In high school Lowell was a terrific football player. When Lowell was 16 he started driving livestock trucks to South St. Paul. After high school he worked for Aetna Insurance Company for a while and then went to work for the Grain Belt Beer distributorship in Marshall. After two weeks of employment he was sent to Ortonville to manage the Grain Belt Beer branch there in 1939. On October 15, 1941 he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Pries in Canby. After they were married they moved to Ortonville where they lived for 57 years. In 1954 Lowell purchased the Grain Belt Beer Distributorship and increased it into a five and a half county distributorship. In 1978, Lowell retired after selling the business to Vernon (Gus) Gustafason. On March 11, 1998 the couple moved to Worthington, then on July 6, 2004 to Golden Horizons, and on June 23, 2010, Lowell became a resident of Crossroads. Lowell and Dorothy celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on October 15, 2010. Lowell was a former member of the First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville, serving on the church council for eight years. He was past president of the Jaycee?s, member of the men?s vocal chorus; he served on the Ortonville city council for four years and was a member of the Moose Lodge. Lowell was also a Mason, reaching the Scottish Rites 32nd degree. He was a member of the Minnesota Beer Wholesalers serving on the board of directors for fifteen years and was president of the MBW in 1969. Lowell was currently a member of the American Lutheran Church in Worthington. Lowell was a great husband, father and grandfather, always making sure his family came first. He loved music, dancing, cooking, entertaining and telling jokes. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports, in the past having season tickets for the Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves. He also was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling. Lowell and Dorothy also traveled extensively in and outside of the United States before and after retiring. Lowell is now dancing with his wife and Dorothy?s dance card is full. Lowell is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann (Mag) and son-in-law, Steve McCuen, Worthington, MN; granddaughter, Stephanie and her husband, Timothy Kowalski, Waukegan, IL; Godchild, Lisa Beth Gustafson Hoftiezer and her husband, Rick, Luverne, MN; sister-in-law, Lucille Hay, niece, Janeen Taveirne and her sons, Tyler and Ross all of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy on October 16, 2010 and one brother, Donald Hay.
