Lucille Grace (Morgan) Taylor, age 91, of Luverne, MN died Friday, July 31, 2015, at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage. She was born on May 6, 1924 in Ellsworth, MN to John and Cora (Nelson) Morgan. She was raised on the family farm near Kanaranzi, MN, the youngest of 6 children.
After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Ellsworth, MN in 1942, Lucille attended the MN School of Business then worked as a secretary in Minneapolis, MN before joining the Coast Guard during WWII. In the Coast Guard she served as a bookkeeper and secretary in Palm Beach, FL then was stationed in Brooklyn, NY. After the war she worked for the Stouffer Corporation in Minneapolis and Chicago.
Following a courtship with Jerome (Jerry) Taylor during the war, Lucille and Jerry were married on October 25, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellsworth, MN. They raised a family of ten children and farmed near Adrian for 52 years. Lucille was one of the founding leaders of the Adrian Arrows 4-H club serving as 4-H leader for 25 years, and demonstration judge at the MN State Fair for 10 years. In 1980, the University of Minnesota began The Farm Family Recognition Program and Jerry and Lucille were the first family in Nobles County chosen to be awarded the Minnesota Farm Family of the Year Award. This honor signified that they had "made significant contributions to Minnesota agriculture and their communities". Upon retirement, the couple moved to Luverne MN where they lived together until Jerry moved to the Veteran's Home.
Throughout her life, Lucille's faith was very important to her and she was very active in her church. As a member of the Catholic Daughters for more than 67 years, Lucille held the roles of regent, district deputy and a state education chairperson. She served as Religious Education Coordinator and taught for several years. In 2014 Lucille and Jerry were honored to receive the Bishop's Medal.
Lucille enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes, gardening, sewing and making quilts.
She is survived by her husband, Jerome Taylor, Luverne; nine of her children and spouses: Maureen and Walt Gearino, Des Moines, IA; Beth Strootman, Andover, MN; Mary Carole and Joel Hornaman, Aberdeen, SD; Tim and Deb Taylor, Adrian, MN; Dan and Suzanne Taylor, Yppsilanti, MI; Kevin Taylor and Julie Jones, Ann Arbor, MI; Leisha Nebel-Taylor (widow of son John), Oshkosh, WI; Kate and Dennis Johnson, Hendricks, MN; Ann and Mark Schumacher, Omaha, NE and Sara Taylor and Miguel Souffront, Woodbury, MN. Lucille is also survived by 31 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cora Morgan; along with her siblings: Dorothy and Hank Bruns, Irene and Richard McClellan, Don and Millie Morgan, Bernard and Lorraine Morgan, Bernice and John Kent. Lucille also experienced the loss of her son John Taylor, son-in-law Larry Strootman and grand-daughters Christine Taylor, Catherine Taylor and Lucy Kate Johnson.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne with parish prayers at 7:30 pm. Visitation also from 9:30 to 10:15 am Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Adrian. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Tuesday at St. Adrian Catholic Church, in Adrian, officiated by Fr. Andrew Beerman & Fr. Thomas Jennings. Burial will be in the St. Adrian Cemetery.
