LYLE MATTHIESEN, age 77, of Luverne, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012, at the Sanford Hospital, in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born in Luverne, September, 5, 1935, the son of Emil and Jessie (Heckt) Matthiesen. Lyle grew up on a farm near Magnolia and graduated from Magnolia High School in 1953. He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1955 and served his country until 1958 when he was honorably discharged.
He married Verla Christensen in 1956; they made their home in rural Magnolia when Lyle finished his tour of duty with the Marines. He drove truck and farmed in the Karanazi and Magnolia area all his life. He married Emily Harms in 1979. He also drove school bus for the Luverne school district and farmed with his son Jed after they moved to Luverne in 2002.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports and spending time with his family.
Lyle is survived by his five children, Collette (Charles) Springmann, Sioux Falls; Kim Burton, and her special friend Nate Stroschein, Crooks, SD; Jodi (Mike) Haas, Benson, MN; Scott (Jen) Matthiesen, Champlin, MN; Jed Matthiesen and his special friend Kristi Cecil, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren, Lindsay, Alissa, Trevor, Brittney, Nicole, Jason, Morgan and Brock; nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse and a sister, Donna Behr.
