MARGIE ARLENE DeGROOT, age 91, of Luverne, died Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Adrian Country Living Cottage. She was born February 10, 1922, in Rossie, IA, to Otto and Hazel (Mills) Wild. Margie's father worked for the Rock Island Railroad and the family moved quite often. She attended schools in Granite, Harris & Laurens, IA; Sioux Falls, SD before graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1940. Margie attended a night typing class & bookkeeping class in Ellsworth from 1940 to 1941. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Davenport Elevator Co., in Ellsworth for four and a half years before her marriage.
Margie married Ralph DeGroot on February 20, 1947, in Ellsworth. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Ash Creek for thirty one years. They moved to Luverne in 1978. The couple worked at the United Methodist Church, in Luverne, as custodians for nearly fourteen years. They retired in 1991. Margie became a resident of the Oaks, later, in 2008 became a resident of Poplar Creek. She moved to the Mary Jane Brown Home in January of 2010; and moved to the Adrian Memory Care in August of 2011.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School; the UMW; the Luverne Senior Citizens; the Luverne VFW Ladies Auxiliary; and the Friendship Club. She enjoyed playing cards & Bingo.
Margie is survived by her son, Dean (Elizabeth) DeGroot, Minneapolis; daughter, Barbara (Gene) Ashby, Luverne; and two granddaughters, Sarah and Anna DeGroot.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph, on July 8, 1993; grandson, Christopher Ashby, on July 5, 2006; and a sister, Betty (Wilford) Johnson.
